Continuing Professional Development - CPD
Latest changes to CPD introduced in January 2008
Overview
In late 2006, an independent evaluation of the Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) program operating in the NSW property services industry recommended changes.
The NSW Government responded to matters raised by stakeholders and is considering
how best to shape CPD so that it meets the needs of all participants. A simpler
points system was introduced on 2 April 2007, with further changes introduced from
1 January 2008.
CPD objectives
Continuing professional development has been introduced as a mechanism for professionalising
the industry and promoting high standards. The requirements for continuing professional
development are aimed at maintaining public confidence by ensuring that industry
participants are continually updating their skills.
Continuing professional development provides industry participants, who have general
competence, with the means for responding effectively to change, adopting new work
practices and enriching their knowledge and skills.
Renewal of a licence or certificate of registration under the Property, Stock and
Business Agents Act 2002 is conditional on licence and certificate holders undertaking
continuing professional development each year.
The aims of the continuing professional development scheme are to:
- increase levels of consumer protection
- promote professionalism across the property agency industry
- improve the knowledge and skills of practitioners
- encourage high standards
- maintain public confidence.
The Office of Fair Trading is responsible for the administration and monitoring
of the continuing professional development scheme. The Comissioner's Guidelines
for Continuing Professional Development for the Property Agency Industry set out
the requirements that must be fulfilled by agents in undertaking their continuing
professional development. The guidelines apply to all sectors: real estate agents,
strata managing agents, stock and station agents, business agents, buyers agents
and residential property managers as well as certificate of registration holders.
The NSW Property and Financial Services ITAB cannot and does not endorse individual training providers.
All details should be confirmed with the providers. Any enquiries as to the registration
or accreditation status of the organisations which appear in the lists should be
directed to the NSW Vocational Education and Training Board (VETAB) which is the
body responsible for registration and accreditation under the Vocational Education
and Training Accreditation Act 1990.
It is an agent's responsibility to understand their CPD requirements to see the
commissioners guidelines for
CPD.
